When to choose rubber ramps
- Doorway thresholds, sliding door tracks or shower hobs (usually under 100mm)
- You want a custom fit to your exact doorway
- You rent and can’t make permanent changes
- You want it discreet, not clinical
- It’s for a wet area — bathroom, shower or outdoor entry
- You want zero maintenance and zero installation

When to choose aluminium ramps
- You need a folding ramp for cars, vans or travel
- A larger temporary rise without construction
- Weight matters — aluminium is much lighter
- A short-term need or event
When to choose timber ramps
- A significant rise needs a permanent solution
- You want the ramp to match the house exterior
- You own the home
- The ramp needs to run over 2–3 metres with handrails
Can you combine materials?
Absolutely — and many clients do. Timber at the front steps, rubber at every internal doorway, sliding door and bathroom. Explore rubber ramps, timber ramps and portable ramps, or book a free assessment and we’ll recommend the most practical mix.
Questions, answered
Rubber vs Aluminium vs Timber FAQs
Still unsure? Call 0422 166 173 and talk to the people who build the ramps.
Which is the cheapest wheelchair ramp material?
For small rises, rubber threshold ramps are usually the most affordable. For large rises, costs depend on length, landings and rails.
Are aluminium ramps slippery?
Smooth aluminium can be slippery when wet unless it has a grip surface. Rubber is naturally grippy.
Do timber ramps need a permit?
Larger permanent ramps may, depending on height and location. Removable rubber ramps don’t.
Which lasts longest?
Rubber and aluminium need little maintenance; timber lasts well with regular upkeep.
What’s best for a mobility scooter?
For doorways, a rubber ramp sized to the scooter. For loading into a vehicle, a folding aluminium ramp.
Can Ramps R Us supply all three?
We specialise in rubber and also design timber ramps and platform steps. For folding aluminium we’ll point you to the right supplier.
